Introduction |
The Lao People's Democratic Republic is a landlocked country between Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, China and Myanmar.
The Lao people and most northern ethnic groups arrived in a series of migrations from China over the past 1,500 years. The first Lao kingdom was founded in 1353 with the capital in Luang Prabang.
Laos offers the opportunity to observe a way of life that has been unchanged for many generations. It is perhaps one of the least commercialized, and to that extent most genuine of all countries in Southeast Asia. Over 80% of the country is still dominated by primary forest and highlands which are home to the many ethnic minorities of Laos. Presently, Vientiane and Luang Prabang are the only legal points of disembarkation by air.
